April 29 @ 17:00 - 19:00

Social Committee
Wine & Wisdom: Effective altruism = ineffective?
Room: A348
Time: 17:15-18:45
Individual and collective Altruism:
If each of us acts according to effective altruism, surely we will bring about the best outcome? Surprisingly, the answer is ‘No’, even if no one is making any factual mistakes. Professor Krister Bykvist will present this puzzle in more detail and explore some reactions to it. The good news is that effective altruism is not doomed, but the puzzle does reveal some surprising and valuable lessons about altruism. (Be ready to be shocked)
We have a distinguished guest that will give an introduction to the topic and then bridge towards a discussion with and between the audience. Professor Krister Bykvist is a professor in Practical Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, Stockholm University and Institute for Futures Studies. Previously, he has taught and conducted research in Oxford and Cambridge.
